We certainly have gotten a huge break from the heat this week with some much needed rain. I have heard that several gardens had just about had it with the humid heat, and I know mine was in that category. With this weather we might eek out another few weeks of home grown tomatoes!
I hope all of our students had a great first week of school, and I wish you all the best of school year. The Fall is always an exciting time as we all know that football season is upon us.
We here at City Hall certainly have been busy over the past few weeks preparing and submitting our annual budget. This year we saw some relief in our collections compared to last year as we did tick up a bit making it a little more comfortable than years before in estimating our revenue for this year . We made a huge investment with regard to public safety with adding new fire apparatus (pumpers and rescue trucks) as well as replacing our oxygen tank systems for our firemen that were years outdated. I hope to get pictures of the new equipment in the newspaper very soon to showcase that public safety is a number one priority of mine during my tenure as your Mayor. I want to provide the best firemen and police officers in Southeast Oklahoma with the best most dependable equipment that we can to protect you, your family and property. We also invested in two new police units to replace high mileage units that seemed to be in the mechanics garage more than they were on the street. We were also able to provide a little more operational funds to purchase much needed equipment.
The police department also received mobile cop computer systems in their vehicles partially paid for by a grant to more adequately run warrant and license checks that aids in officer safety and efficiency.
I will always put this community's safety and well being at the top of my list as long as I am here. I'm thrilled to be able to afford to do so by your willingness to shop at home whenever you can to support your local government so we can keep providing top notch service to you.
We also made a huge investment in our street department. In addition to the purchases of two Kioti cab-over tractors and a boom tractor/brush cutter to keep the grass cut and looking good through the growing season. We also got our asphalt laying machine on the street and started paving. We bought an older machine, but it works great as you can see with the new overlay around the new elementary school. I am very proud of our street and water maintenance departments for working together to learn to operate the machine: they have done an excellent job. With being a small city, a big problem with the major asphalt companies in our area is that if you don't have a quarter of a million dollars to put up front to do a job, you can't get on their list. Doing the work ourselves allows us to save you the tax payer money, it also allows us to do smaller jobs in a shorter amount of time and eventually we will get caught up on the rougher areas by doing the work ourselves. Just be patient with us.
As you can see I am very excited about the coming year with the new directions we are moving and the newer equipment that will keep us working and not broke down.
Have a great rest of your week! Until next time, thanks for reading,
