We all know of the great intense sporting rivalry between Wilburton and Hartshorne, now we have a "Go Green" rivalry. Between March 11th and March 24th, the "Battle of Gowan Mountain" will take place with the communities west of Gowan Mountain (Hartshorne and Haileyville) competing with those east of Gowan Mountain (Wilburton, Panola, Red Oak and Buffalo Valley). The goal is to collect the most weight in recyclable material. We are working to make your participation as easy as possible by expanding the drop off locations, as well as expanding the types of materials we accept.
This is one of many events being held during the National Great American Cleanup Program between March 1st and May 31st. This particular event will help kick off the Recycling Program in Hartshorne and Haileyville by bringing awareness to their citizens of the new program. Wilburton's program is fairly new as well, but residents have proven how much they care about the future by their increasing recycling deposits in the many containers around town just for their benefit.
