News and Announcements

Mayor's Article, 15 June 2017

Hello again.   I cannot express enough my gratitude and appreciation for the the response and support of Wilburton Fire Department, Wilburton Police, Ash Creek Fire, EOSC Campus Police, Pafford EMS, Latimer County Sheriff's Office, West End Fire, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and Latimer County Emergency Management and all of the volunteers that helped fight the Franklin Electric fire on Monday. The fire was suppressed quickly from such a fast response and could have been a lot worse than what it was. I am especially thankful for that there were no injuries. I spoke to plant manager Travis Schifferns on Tuesday and he expressed his thanks for all involved who helped out. Franklin is our largest employer and is a total asset to our community and this was certainly a scary situation. I told Mr. Schifferns that the city would be there for him and his employees to help out in any way that we could to get them back to work as soon as possible. The damage was contained to the roof and they believe down time will be minimal. I am very proud of everyone who worked so hard to save the facility.

The budget process this year has been tedious at best.  I have seen over the past two years that we have lost about $60,000.00 in sales taxes; however, I am not surprised as the entire state seems to be struggling with a lagging economy. Cities and towns large and small are taking a sales tax hit. The City of Oklahoma City has cut fire and police around 1.75 million dollars! This isn't a good situation not only for the only source of tax funding for cities and towns to operate on, but it puts a damper on economic growth as well.  Businesses and companies large and small do not want to expand or start new businesses with a lagging economy. The City of Wilburton will hold steady this year and try our best as employees quit or retire to not re-hire that position for the time being and to do everything we can to do more to save your tax dollars.  We will not be cutting any funds as of it yet in this year's budget; however, I will be monitoring each month and if this trend continues, swift action will be taken. We cannot afford to respond to problems like being suddenly startled by the bright lights of a looming catastrophe coming at us, because there are a lot of Oklahoma armadillo and opossum that have realized by that time it is way too late to lead! We won't get ran over, I just ask again for everyone to join me in shopping at home whenever we can to support our local economy.

Join us this weekend for some exciting events. We have the Wilburton Round-up Club Rodeo Friday and Saturday night, and the Belle Starr Heritage Festival on Saturday. There are several fun events going on that day, as well as food vendors and old west re-enactments to enjoy.  Please find us on Facebook at Belle Starr Heritage Festival for all of the events scheduled  that day. Please know that the 5k run has been cancelled.

Note: The BELLE STARR PARADE HAS BEEN MOVED TO 4:00pm.   This is to accommodate the funeral of Street Commissioner Ronnie Massey at 2:00pm, to give all citizens a chance to pay their respects.

Until next time, thanks for reading and as always, if we can help give us a call at City Hall 918-465-5361.
