On May 18, Wilburton was honored with a 2016 Playful City USA designation by “KaBoom!”, who recognized 257 cities across the nation. As a result of that designation, plus completing qualifying requirements such as producing a video showing kids from Wilburton in a “playful” situation, Wilburton was one of five cities receiving a $20,000 grant for new equipment to update Joe Roberson Park located northwest of City Hall.
Our Parks & Rec/Community Development Director is working to implement the updating of the park as soon as possible. Her enthusiasm has caught the attention of the engineers, the supporting staff, and local citizens who are eagerly awaiting the completion of the park. “I am so proud that our City was selected as one of two Oklahoma Cities to be named, “Playful City USA Community”. This fits right into our goal of making our City healthier while “PLAYING” together, thus becoming a more interactive community. Wilburton is a friendly community where we work together, and now we will be able to create PLAY opportunities for all of our residents.” said Stephen Brinlee, Mayor of Wilburton. “Balanced and active play is crucial to the well-being of kids and adults. By integrating play into the City, we attract and retain families who want homes in close proximity to safe places to play. The new park will be beneficial in so many ways.”
