The weather is getting hot!  It looks like we are in store for a classic Oklahoma summer.  There have been a lot of events  of late for our community to take part in.  I hope everyone enjoyed the Cruise Night a weekend or so ago, and this past weekend was the annual "What About Bob" Chuck Wagon Races on High Bridge.  These folks work hard to bring different activities to our area for all to enjoy, and I appreciate their efforts.

This weekend is the annual Wilburton Round Up Club Rodeo and our now annual Belle Starr Heritage Festival all day on Saturday.  The Wilburton Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Inc., and local volunteers have put together another good day of fun downtown, and we hope to see you!  Several activities are planned throughout the day.  There will be a 5k "Pace" Run at 9:00a.m. on the Green Frog trail, this is when the food and craft vendors will begin.  A Bank Robbery by our re-enactors will begin at high noon, followed by a train robbery at 3:00p.m. with small acts in between.  The Parade will be at 4p.m. and a BBQ Cook-off judged at 12:30p.m.  We also have live music in the pocket park from 12 to 5p.m.  We are still looking for barbecue cook-off participants.  A loin and pork butts will be provided, but we ask you to provide a rack of pork ribs for the three panel judges to taste.  Entry for the BBQ Cook-off is free, so drag your smokers to town and show off your skills!  Food and craft vendor registrations will be open until the day of the event, so if you want to participate,  give the Chamber of Commerce a call at 918-465-2759  to register.  There will also be bounce houses for the kids and a Weiner Dog Race at 11:00 a.m. by the courthouse. We also ask you to come out and support our rodeo that starts at 8:00p.m. at the rodeo grounds.

We are in the process of going through a grant process in our quest to develop our parks in the city. I am thankful for Eastern Oklahoma State College Mass Communication Department for helping Debbie Vega put together a video to promote our city-wide play efforts.  We have the video on both Debbie and my Facebook pages so that folks can like and vote on our video.  Out of the 10 videos that made the final cut nation-wide, we are in first place with the votes that we have received; the top 5 videos get a $20,000.00 grant for playground equipment.  We are working toward a well rounded parks and recreation program that not only benefits the young, but our Senior Citizens as well. The park next to City Hall will have the walking track resurfaced as well as new playground equipment with work out stations for exercise.  We want to work toward a more healthy and active community, which has caught the eye of the McAlester News Capital, Fox 23 News in Tulsa, the Daily Oklahoman and of course, our own Latimer County News-Tribune. The Joe Roberson Park, Green Thumb Park, City Lake Park area, Wilburton Municipal Airport, and some opportunities for public access shooting enthusiasts at the gun range, have all been addressed by our park's strategic plan, and we won't stop until we get all of these developed to have more community activities for folks to participate in. We appreciate your support in the future for our projects as more grant opportunities become available.

Until next time, thanks for reading; and as always, if we can be of help give us a call at City Hall 918-465-5361.
